ARTWORKS IN SEIFFEN

The 400 individual components of the world heritage title on the Saxonys side include the transforming from mining to wood working here in Seiffen. The village, founded in 1324 by miners, became world fame through its typical wooden toys, which are made with a special technique of wood turning, the ring-turning. This techniuqe is operated commercially worldwide only here. As a historical witness, the only fully preserved, fully functional ring-turning workshop can be visited in the Seiffen open air museum.
Since the beginning of the 18th Century, the sales of the Erzgebirge wooden art became important Europe- and worldwide. A central motif in this art is the octagonal Seiffen church, one of the most famous sacred buildings of the Erzgebirge and extensive component of manufacturing in Müller's workshops.

To preserve the heritage

Many motifs still bear witness to how mining has shaped the forms and themes of the the Erzgebirge folk-art. With the receipt of the world heritage title, for instance, the sitting smoking man Miner, whose product development took already place in the middle of the 1990, but never found the way into the manufacturing range of products of the Müller workshop, finally become part of the serial production.
